John von Neumann University

Hungary

OVERVIEW

John von Neumann University (JvNU), based in Kecskemét, is one of the youngest tertiary educational institutions in Hungary. However, the university’s legal predecessors have a history going back over 60 years and boast longstanding traditions. It received the title University of Applied Sciences in 2016, since when it has become the leading higher education institute in the region. The university bears the name of the world-famous mathematician John von Neumann since 2017 and represents the scientist’s spirit in the university’s everyday life too. Since 2020 John von Neumann University operates as a private funded higher education institution with public benefit purposes maintained by a foundation.

Our small sized university with a bit more than 4000 students, offers programmes in technical sciences, economics, and agriculture. It has achieved significant results in terms of research and innovation and has fostered extensive business and institutional networks. Building on our dynamically expanding international connections, broad-based training portfolio and research potential and infrastructure, we are striving to gain a recognised place in the European Higher Education Area.

Our academic work:
JvNU has three faculties:
- Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science (GAMF),
- Faculty of Economics and Business (GTK),
- Faculty of Horticulture and Rural Development (KVK).

In addition to the numerous programmes in Hungarian language, the faculties offer programmes in English at undergraduate, graduate and PhD levels (6 BSc, 2 MSc and 1 PhD - John von Neumann University Doctoral School of Management and Business Administration) too. All programmes are tailored to the European Bologna scheme therefore the degrees are recognised not just across Europe but around the world too.

The cornerstones of the University's value system are: professional commitment, student-orientedness, ethical and empathic approach, quality, efficiency, responsibility, and reliability. In the creation of its programmes, this University of applied sciences aims to strike a balance between core fundamentals, modern know-how that can prepare students directly for their professional careers, and the practical application of such knowledge. The University continuously adapts its educational potential to European trends and demands and takes on a lion’s share in regional research and development projects.

We are committed to engaging with the competitive sector. As a result, we boast with nearly 100 corporate contacts. These companies cover all sectors of industry (automotive, engineering, food, health, etc.). We provide our students with up-to-date practical knowledge through our corporate innovation projects. Our vision is that the university, in partnership with industry, will become the innovation engine of the region.

Research for the Future

Besides teaching we put a lot of effort into research knowing that today’s futuristic ideas are tomorrow’s everyday practices. Our Knowledge Centres in different fields contribute to technical, social and scientific development of our local community and wider society as well. The Hydrogen Technology Research Centre, for example, in close collaboration with international partners is aiming to contribute to the widespread social acceptance of hydrogen technology, while our Eurasia Centre is focusing on the geopolitical, economic and social processes in the world’s most populous and fastest growing region. One of the newest research centres of the University is the AI Research Centre, which has results not only in the academic but also in the practical fields.

Sustainable thinking

JvNU places great emphasis on sustainability, which appears in several areas of the university’s life, such as teaching, research and development, even appears in the infrastructure of the new CAMPUS building opened in 2019. Further proofs of our commitment to sustainability are the inventions and self-built developments that have won major successes and recognition at various international competitions and exhibitions. We proudly speak about our solar-panelled car (Megalux); our fully electric motorbike (Supermoto); or the custom-designed hydrogen powered vehicle (NeumannH2), which was a unique feature of the COP28, the UN Climate Change Conference in 2023 in Dubai.

The academic personnel of the three faculties along with the administrative staff of the University is looking forward to welcoming the international students who are seeking to pursue their professional dreams by studying at a modern university in the heart of Europe.
